It’s funny, as a nurse when a patient asks me for something to help relieve pain, a cough or any other hundreds of symptoms out there I know just what to reach for. But, as a Mom it’s a whole different ball game. I hesitate to give them anything. I think to myself is it safe? Are they old enough? Will it help?
Seriously, like hundred questions run though my head. After all my training and years of experience in the ICU I find myself in the same boat as all of you Mama’s…Lost in the world of fighting the symptoms of the common cold for my girls.
And now that we’re in the midst of cold and flu season I’m sure you’re feeling the same way.
I know I can’t stand seeing my babies cough all day and night, tired throughout the day because they’re uncomfortable and coughing up a storm. #whoswithme
But here’s the thing Mama’s, these are typically caused by a virus. Meaning we can’t do anything, but wait it out. The BEST thing you can do is help treat the symptoms.
So here are my tried and true ways to help your babies through their cold.
5 Ways to Care For Kids With A Cold
Cough Medicine – Once Aria turned 4 our pediatrician recommended Children’s Delsym. It’s made for kids 4+ and it gives 12 hour relieve. I love there’s only 1 active ingredient to treat just the cough, and Aria loves the flavor. Best part, if you catch it and need some relieve, you can take it too!
Hydration – this is the number one thing. Water is of course best, but honestly whatever they’ll take is fine. This is important to keep their body’s fighting against the virus.
Humidifier – Keeping moisture in the air helps with those dry coughs. Plus, the cool mist will help break up mucus and will aid in keeping their mouths moist if they’re not able to breathe through their nose.
Lots of Rest – be armed with movies and tv shows. My girls don’t actually sit around and watch shows, they typically like them on in the background while playing. But, when they’re sick it’s a whole different story. I like it though, it just means I get some extra snuggle time with them.
Keep Them Clean – Encourage hand washing ALL. DAY. LONG. This is the number 1 way to prevent the spread of germs. As they are up and around playing be sure to wipe down the door knobs, toys, light switches etc…By doing these two things you’re helping others from catching it, but also limiting re-exposure to your child. Also, a good warm bath helps too.
The good news is Cold and Flu season doesn’t hang around long. Giving your child a little extra TLC and following these steps will help them get through it. It makes getting through cold and flu season a little easier!
