Contour! It’s all the rage these days, don’t you think? It all we’re hearing about in the makeup and beauty world. We contour because it gives the face definition, giving your face that 3-D effect. It allows you to chisel out the beautiful features you’re born with. It’s time we embrace our beauty and learn how to enhance those features we love, and hide those we don’t! This is what contour does….It brings out your natural beauty. In case you missed it and new to HACing (Highlight and Contouring) I went over the basics of highlighting last week.
WHY CONTOUR
Prior to contouring, we would apply one color all over our faces. This takes away a love of the natural features and gives the faces a flat and lifeless look. Who wants that??? I’m sure no one raised their hands there. Basically, our faces our different shapes and sizes and have natural shadows. Placing contour in those areas creates beautiful, feminine features. Ultimately giving your face some life; even gives your face a lift!
WHERE TO APPLY CONTOUR
Everyone’s face is a different size and shape, but in general, contour is places in these four areas on your face:
- Cheekbones
- Forehead along your hairline
- Jawline
- Along the bridge of your nose
HOW TO APPLY CONTOUR
Cheekbones: Here are my tips to mastering this part of contouring, it can be a little tricky at first. But with some practice you can master it in no time. First, lets locate your cheek bone. It starts right at about the top of your ear. It’s just below your eye area, and runs parallel to your jawline. Just below this bone, you’ll almost push up into it as you apply your shade. This is right where you want to be. Start at your hairline, and draw a line along that hallow part under the cheek bone all the way to your cheek. Be sure to add a small curve upward, like a “J” to cup the apples of your cheeks. This gives your cheeks a lift and is very falttering. I always say a good rule of thumb is to stop contour placement before you get to your laugh lines. This will make your face appear dirty and loses the effect of slimming down this area.
Forehead: When you look at a ball, it is naturally shaded at the top and bottom. And so it is with your forehead. We want to give that shadow back to your forehead by applying contour just below your hairline. Depending on how long your forehead is will depend on how much contour you apply. Start with a small line and you can always add more. Once it is blended your face has more dimension.
Jawline: By shadowing your jawline, you are making that area pop instead of letting it melt into a double chin. You simply take your contour color and brush it along your jawline…that’s it! And then you can blend it downward. It will give you a nice shadowed affect. This is perfect for creating space if you have extra skin or fat in this area.
Nose: Not everybody likes a contoured nose. But if you do, then it’s pretty simple! The bridge of your nose is right down the middle. You want to take your contour and add color right along the sides of your bridge. Not a lot, just a thin line. This will make your nose appear slimmer. If you have a larger end to your nose, you can also add contour color around the area to make it look smaller.
Contour is such a fun and easy step to add to your beauty routine! Gone are the days of the flat face look! Let’s embrace our beauty and bring it out! Contour is a beauty basic that you don’t want to miss!
