It’s that time of year where we’re all constantly battling colds. From runny noses, sore throats to those awful stomach bugs we’re constantly passing germs back and forth. Regardless of how well you take care of yourself and family it’s inevitable, you’re going to get sick. But, there are some key things you can do throughout this season to keep some of those germs at bay. As a nurse I’m constantly thinking about being and staying healthy, and not bringing hospital bugs home. So here are some of my tips for keeping your family healthy during the Fall and Winter months.
Tips For Keeping Your Family Healthy
Hand Washing – Ok this seems so basic, but let’s be honest…how often do you actually do this at home? I’ll admit it, I’m not always the best. I’ll wipe the girls nose, or clean their dirty hand after playing outside, but I don’t always wash mine after than. Do you? Normally it’s not as big of a deal, but during these next few months it makes a big differents. Plus hand washing is the number 1 way to prevent the passing of bacteria and viruses.
Supplements – This is so important. From things like Probiotics to Vitamin C. We all know the awesomeness of Vitamin C is its antioxidant powers. But, probiotics is also something that’s super important. Our gut is a breading ground for bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics are the good bacteria “normal flora” that helps keep the bads ones from taking over. Benefits of taking a probiotic help boost your immune system, improves sleep and this one also includes B12 for energy.
Get Sleep – This is so important. This is the time your body gets to rest and recuperates. It’s the time it gets to relax and heal itself from the day’s stresses that have been put on it.
Stay Hydrated – drinking enough water helps keeps your system flushed. Your body thrives on water and ensuring it has a enough is key to staying healthy.
Decrease sugar intake – ok now trust me, I know this is hard. I have THE BIGGEST sweet tooth and I realize the holidays are coming up. But, the reality is that bacteria thrives on sugar. That’s when it flourishes. It’s ok to treat yourself, but be mindful of fulfilling your family with lots for veggies and foods packed with essential vitamins and minerals.
Limit sharing foods and drinks – besides hand hygiene, this is the top way to spread germs. I know my girls are constantly passing things back and forth. So just keep an eye on them and stop them from doing this as much as possible.
Disinfect toys – Especially when you’re kids are little this is so important. They chew on them, touch their snotty nose and keep playing. One thing I do is take them and throw them in the dishwasher if they can, or setup up the bathtub for one big wash station.
This is the time of year we need to be a little more hyper-focused on keeping our families and ourselves healthy. I’d love to hear some of your tips and tricks to staying healthy during this time of year?
